Jacksonville student wins national essay contest

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Jacksonville middle school student has earned a trip to New York as a national essay contest winner.

Rising seventh-grader Alfredo Reyes, who attends Kirby Smith Middle School, was recently named one of 10 winners in the 17th Annual Arthur Ashe Essay and Photo Contest.

Reyes participates in the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation national junior tennis and learning program.

Participants in the program were eligible to enter the contest in one of five age groups: 10 and under, 11/12, 13/14, 15/16 or 17/18. One boy and one girl in each age group were selected as winners.

Reyes competed in the 11/12 age group, answering a question about a local youth tennis and learning hero.

National essay winners receive a trip for two to New York and will be guests at the 2015 Arthur Ashe Kids' Day presented by Hess on Aug. 29.

"MWYF students participate in this contest annually and Alfredo is the first to win the grand prize," said Terri Florio, MWYF executive director. "We are very proud of him and know he will enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime trip to New York."
