Caught on camera: Thieves snatch holiday packages from Northside porch

Homeowner 'nervous' after home surveillance video captures packages being stolen

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – There's a neighborhood crime alert in the Sherwood Forest area on the Northside, where police are looking for a group of teenagers caught on surveillance video stealing packages from a family's porch.

In the video captured Tuesday, teenage boys can be seen walking up to the porch on Thomas Dukes Court, snatching packages and then running away.

The homeowner, John Scott, told News4Jax that the packages contained Christmas season. Though the family wasn't home at the time, the surveillance cameras were on.

"The video shows a young man walking down the street in front of the house and the next thing we saw was that he ran across the front yard," Scott said.

Scott said the teens came to his house on Tuesday and scoped things out before coming back a second time. That's when he said they grabbed several holiday packages that his son ordered, dropping one package when a neighbor spotted them near the home.

"Make sure you keep an eye on someone that you see you don't think belongs in the neighborhood," Scott said.

Although the items taken were not expensive, Scott said it makes him uneasy knowing someone was on his property and messing with his belongings without permission. He said he's glad his neighbors intervened.

"It makes me feel very uncomfortable and a little nervous," Scott said. "I'd just encourage all the neighbors to be diligent in checking the neighborhood and looking at people who are in the neighborhood."

Police were notified and Scott said they're looking for the group of young men.

Anyone who recognizes the individuals in the surveillance is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500.
