Driver killed in crash with dump truck

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 29-year-old woman was killed early Wednesday morning after her  Dodge Magnum hit a dump truck stopped on U.S. 1 near the Duval-St. Johns county line.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a dump truck was traveling south on Philips Highway about 2:45 a.m. when the faster-moving sedan ran into it.

Troopers say the Magnum caught fire as a result of the impact and the driver could not get out of the vehicle.

The victim -- 29-year-old Lisa Marie Amalfitano, of Jacksonville -- died at the scene.

"After the impact, the (dump truck) driver attempted to pull over at the safest possible place but then started to experience mechanical issues due to the impact," said FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan.

Troopers identified the truck driver as Fernando Alonso, 29, of Bunnell.

The FHP report says the accident remains under investigation.

"We do think speed may be a factor," Bryan said.

Northbound lanes of Philips Highway reopened around 6:45 a.m. Southbound lanes reopened before 9 a.m.
