Elementary school on lockdown after man shot during robbery

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – S.P. Livingston Elementary went into code yellow lockdown late Thursday morning after one man was shot during a robbery attempt within a mile of the school.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told Channel 4 that the neighbor of a man being robbed on Junior Street, about three blocks from the school, stepped in to help.  The neighbor ended up getting shot.

Officers said both the gunman and the person who was being robbed took off running.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

"This particular street is mostly residential, so we are knocking on doors," said JSO Sgt. Bobby Lyle. "A lot of people were outside and saw this happen, so we are talking to witnesses.  We are obviously identifying and collecting evidence and trying to search for any additional information."

Principal Jennifer Brown told Channel 4 she heard that shots were fired near the school and that police responded to the school as a precaution.  Brown says the students are were safe.

Some parents who heard about the lockdown have shown up at the school.

"I got to pick up my kids today and I am going to be worried," said Icechia Larthen. "I hope everything is OK with the kids."

Police said everything was fine at the school.

"It's better to lock it down, secure the children, secure the faculty," Channel 4 crime and safety analyst Ken Jefferson said. "Make sure they are safe, as opposed to assuming it's not a big deal and not doing anything about it."
