JACKSONVIILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office bomb squad removed a suspicious envelope with a white powder substance from the Federal Courthouse in Downtown Jacksonville on Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.
Monroe Street in front of the courthouse was blocked with crime scene tape during the incident.
The envelope was found in the mailroom and was taken to be evaluated off site.
No one was harmed, and the Courthouse was not evacuated, but the mailroom was sealed off during the investigation.
Marshal's Office spokesman Silvestre Del Rosario said investigators know who sent the letter, but he did not release that information because the incident is still under investigation.
He said marshals were called just before noon after a mailroom handler found the envelope.
"Our court security officer who does the screening found it suspicious and alerted our office, and we took our proper procedures from there," Del Rosario said.
All mail that goes through the courthouse is screened, and when the envelope was flagged as suspicious, authorities were called, per protocol.
Workers Downtown said the situation appeared to be handled quickly.
"I talked to a couple people who work in some offices around here and they weren't even aware of what was going on," Pat Orman said. "I think they got here and they did their job well, and they took care of it."
