Friends, colleagues raise money for woman killed

Depontes honored at Mavericks Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In the midst of One Spark celebrations downtown, employees of a local bar are paying tribute to their colleague and friend who was killed in a car crash last weekend.

Police said 28-year-old Jessica Depontes crossed over Arlington Road and crashed into a concrete pole on University Boulevard.

Depontes' death is devastating to her co-workers at Mavericks in the Jacksonville Landing.

"Immediately when she started working here it was an immediate, ‘Wow, she's really cool. I could see myself hanging out with her,'" said bartender Kathryn Johns.

Depontes died at the scene of the crash, leaving behind her fiancé and two young children.

In an effort to support Depontes' family, Mavericks collected money from their loyal customers Thursday night. Johns said they had already raised about $3,000 for Depontes' family half way through the night.

"I am going to make sure that her legacy lives on and that her kids are taken care of," said Johns.

Depontes' viewing will be held Friday night at Frazier Funeral Home on Normandy Boulevard. Her funeral is planned for Saturday morning.
