Man arrested after being shot by woman during home invasion, police say

21-year-old hospitalized with gunshot wound to leg, then arrested

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man who was shot in the leg Wednesday evening after kicking in the door of a Regency apartment has been arrested, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

A 19-year-old woman told police that she was alone in her apartment on Monument Road about 6 p.m. when her door was forced open. The woman grabbed her gun and fired at the intruder, hitting him once, investigators said.

The man, later identified as 21-year-old Kyle Williams, left the scene in a black vehicle with another man driving. Police said Williams showed up at a walk-in clinic with a gunshot wound. He was treated and released at UF Health Jacksonville, then arrested and charged with burglary.

The woman was detained and questioned. Police said she was cooperative and was not arrested.

A resident of the apartment complex said the incident is unusual for the area.

"I like it. It's quiet," Roxanne DelLior said. "Everybody keeps to themselves."

News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said that even though Williams was caught, there are many questions to be answered.

"They will look to see if they are related in any way, if they know each other or if it is just a random act where he broke into this person's house and tried to commit some type of crime other than home invasion. Was he attempting some type of assault or robbery?" Smith said.

Smith said the woman had every right to protect herself.

"Once they break into the house, once they gain entry, then they (residents) are within their rights to defend themselves and use deadly force if necessary," Smith said.

Police have not said whether Williams had a weapon. The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
