"It was about a 200-square-foot building that was a combo laundry and storage area -- limited damage and separate from any apartments," said Chief Donald Powell with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue.

Powell said the fire was knocked down quickly.

He told News4Jax that no one was in the building when the fire started and that no one was injured in the fire.

We spoke to a resident who says he saw the fire, but stayed inside his apartment unit.  Channel 4's Ashley Mitchem asked the chief if that was the right thing to do.

"It all depends.  A lot of apartments are separated from one building to the other, so unless it's in your affected building, stay in place.  If (the fire is) in your building, you should probably leave no matter the time of day," said Powell.

The cause of the fire remained unknown as of Sunday afternoon.  Fire investigators told News4Jax it does not appear suspicious.  The state fire marshal is investigating the cause.

The owners of the building said there were no space heaters or heating systems on at the time of the fire, but fire investigators said at this time of year people should be careful when heating their homes.

"Space heaters, yeah just be real careful with those," said Powell.

The owner of the apartments told News4Jax they hope the building will be back to normal by the end of the week.
