JSO: Car thief pistol-whipped victim, led police on chase

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was arrest Thursday night after hitting a 61-year-old man in the face with a gun, taking off in the victim's car and leading police on a chase, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. 

According to the police report, the victim was watching TV about 9:30 p.m. in his home on Avalon Cove Drive East, which is inside the Jacksonville Country Club near the intersection of Beach and Kernan boulevards, when he decided to go get a pizza. Police said the man found his car already running with 21-year-old Khalaf Williams inside.

Officers said Williams took off running, but turned around and came back to the car, pistol-whipped the victim in the face, got in the car and took off.

About an hour later, officers spotted the stolen car on West Beaver Street and pursued it for about 4 miles before Williams crashed into a ditch on Commonwealth Avenue, they said.. He got out and ran, but a JSO K-9 caught up with him.

Williams was charged with car theft, burglary, battery and eluding police. 

JSO Sgt. Jason Bailey said the victim was taken to Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Editor's note: This story has been corrected. Police originally said they were investigating a shooting, and the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the face. The Sheriff's Office later said the victim was not been shot but was hit in the face with a gun.
