JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The 6-year-old girl whose abduction late Friday prompted an Amber Alert was located safe in Georgia late Sunday night.
Onnika Fisher and her mother, Charity Chatman, 39, were found during a traffic stop just before midnight in Perry, just south of Macon.
A motorist noticed Chatman's Buick that was publicized as part of the missing persons coverage and alerted authorities, according to the Houston County Sheriff's Office.
"People who hear these alerts or see these alerts really pay attention to them because they want to be the one to help out. Particularly when you have a child involved, people want to help out because they want that child to be safe," said Channel 4 Crime and Safety Analyst Ken Jefferson.
Police on Monday said Onnika was returned to Jacksonville and is in custody of the Department of Children and Families.
Chatman (pictured in Houston County booking photo) is being held in Georgia and will be charged with interference with custody once returned to Florida. Officials said she appeared before a judge on Monday morning and was ordered held pending transfer back to Jacksonville.
"The interference with custody is a little less severe as far as the penalties versus the kidnapping, simply because it's usually a family member involved in some kind of way. But it doesn't make the judge feel good that you've defied their order by taking this child," said Jefferson.
An Amber Alert was issued for Fisher on Friday evening after her mother took her during a DCF supervised visit in Jacksonville. Chatman did not have custody of her daughter.
Georgia's version of the Amber Alert, a Levi's Call, was issued Sunday afternoon for Onnika Fisher of Jacksonville.
