Dr. Vinny Samuel, an Epidemiologist with the Florida Department of Health says there are several ways you can be proactive this summer to protect you, your family and your neighbors from mosquitoes and the West Nile Virus.

First, standing water attracts mosquitoes and helps them multiply so drain any standing water around your home.

Get rid of old tires, drums, bottles and broken appliances that are lying around and won't be used for a long time.

If you have birdbaths empty and clean it and if you have pets, you should empty and clean their bowls once or twice a week.

Also, if you park a boat or your car outside, cover it with a tarp so water doesn't accumulate.
