JSO: 3-year-old girl dies after hit by car

Police say driver of vehicle turns himself in after leaving scene

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has confirmed that a 3-year-old girl was killed Friday night after she was hit by a car.

Sgt. Donald Washington said a Tariyah Williams, 3, and a 2-year-old were playing in the yard of a home on Johnson Avenue when Williams ran across the street in front of silver Mercury.

After hitting the girl, the driver of the vehicle made a U-turn, got out of the car, picked her up from the road, put her on the lawn, then got back into his car and drove away.

When authorities arrived, Williams (pictured, right, in family photo) was transported to a nearby hospital where she died.

Police said witnesses followed the vehicle but lost him as he drove toward the Northside. Witnesses were able to get the tag of the vehicle and report it to police. Police found the silver Mercury abandoned a short time later.

While investigating, police said the driver of the vehicle turned himself into police. Police did not release the name of the driver Friday night, or say what charges that person would face.
