JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 21-year-old man is dead, another man is in custody and one person remains on the run after an officer-involved shooting Friday evening in the Grand Park area of Northwest Jacksonville.

The shooting happened after an officer investigating an abandoned car on Moncrief Road around 6:20 p.m. saw a Chrysler Sebring convertible go by that had been carjacked on Thursday.

"The officer spotted the car, verified the tag (and) a short pursuit ensued," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Director Tom Hackney. "The vehicle stopped at the end of the of the pursuit."

Police said three men ran from the vehicle near the intersection of Division and 25th streets, one man in one direction, two in another.  Officer Matt Bolan, a 13-year veteran, followed the two men who ran off together.

Hackney said Bolan chased the two behind a home in the area, and that's when the suspect pointed a gun at the officer, who fired at the suspect.

The suspects continued running into the front yard, where Bolan continued to fire at the suspect with the gun, hitting him several times in the torso.

"The other suspect gave up, put his hands up and cooperated with Officer Bolan," Hackney said. "He held that suspect until other officers arrived. The suspect who was hit was transported to UF Health, where he died."

The man who died was identified as Homer Ken Warren.  Terrance Clark, 25, surrendered to the officer, was arrested and is charged with some juvenile violations.

At a Saturday morning news conference, Hackney talked about the dangers police officers face every day.

"I've said it before, I'll say it again. The day-to-day work the police industry does is dangerous," Hackney said.  "They deal with dangerous people who take this matter into their own hands. Aiming these guns at officers is not a smart thing to do and in many cases will result in what happened to Mr. Warren."

UNCUT: Saturday morning JSO update on police-involved shooting

Per police policy, Bolan was placed on administrative leave while the police-involved shooting is investigated.

Hackney said Clark was not cooperating with police and had not provided information about the third suspect, who was still at large.

Police ask anyone with information about the third suspect is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
