ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - A jury votes to give a former Putnam County jail escapee who had been convicted of murder the death penalty.

On Tuesday, a jury voted 8-4 in favor of the death penalty for Timothy Fletcher, 28, who last month was found guilty in St. Johns County court in the 2009 killing of 66-year-old Helen Googe.

Fletcher, of Welaka, and Doni Brown, of Satsuma, escaped from the jail April 15, 2009. Googe's body was found hours after the breakout.

They went to Googe's home to rob her of money, but Googe had only $37, prosecutors said. They said the defendants then beat and strangled her.

The two men were caught days later when deputies acting on a tip chased them down on foot and tackled them.

Brown's trial is scheduled to begin later this year.
