Man, 20, dies after being shot in Walmart parking lot

Friend drove victim to Kangaroo gas station

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 20-year-old man died after being shot in a Walmart parking lot on the Southside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said the shooting occurred Tuesday night shortly after 8. After Anthony Bannister was shot in a car in the Walmart parking lot off Southside and Beach boulevards, his friend drove him to a Kangaroo gas station on Southside Boulevard and Hogan Road.

The victim's friend said he was scared after the shooting and was trying to get away, and pulled into the first lit area he saw, according to Lt. Jimmy Judge with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. The friend was already on the phone with police at that time.

"Officers went on location at both scenes simultaneously. What we found here was a victim with life-threatening injuries, he'd been shot. He was taken to Shands (Jacksonville Medical Center) and has since died, so this is a homicide," Judge said.

Homicide detectives were interviewing witnesses and searching for the shooter.

"Talking to witnesses, it appears the victim and another male were in the vehicle together, when a third male approached them on foot," JSO Sgt. Shawn Coarsey said. "The third male possibly got into the vehicle with them. Something happened at that point. Shots were fired. The third male got out of the vehicle and fled on foot."

Investigators did not know if the suspect knew the victim and his friend.

If anyone has information about this deadly shooting, call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
