Man arrested in killing of Jacksonville soldier outside Colorado bar

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Police in Colorado have arrested a man in connection with the killing of a Fort Carson soldier outside a downtown Colorado Springs nightclub last month.

The Brown family learned Tuesday that Larry Spencer Jr., 28, was arrested for the death of their son, 28-year-old Army Specialist, D'Angelo Brown. Spencer is charged with the murder of Brown that happened on Aug. 18.

For weeks Brown's family didn't know if police would catch the killer, until the phone rang in their Jacksonville home Monday.

"Best wake up I've ever had," said Brown's father, Broderick. "As soon as they went into booking, the detective called me and said, ‘we got him, we got the shooter and wanted you to be the first to know.'"

Colorado police Spencer has given investigators a partial confession. Broderick said Spencer's arrest answers questions for the family, but it does nothing for the grief.

"It doesn't bring easier pain for the family, but we are deeply appreciative to the Colorado police department and making that arrest for us," said Broderick.

Officers were called about 2:39 a.m. Aug. 18 on a reported disturbance in front of the Circa Bar on South Tejon Street. Arriving officers were told shots had been fired in the area, and they found Brown outside the bar. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.

Brown's father said his son had recently been promoted and approved to transfer to Fort Stewart in Savannah to be closer to family. The Forrest High School alum leaves behind seven brothers and sisters.

Broderick told Channel 4 that his oldest son is planning on traveling to Colorado to keep the rest of the family up-to-date on Spencer's court proceedings. Broderick said his family has always been close, and his son's death has only brought them closer.

Brown served in the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and was a food service specialist.
