ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - A 28-year-old St. Johns County man who pleaded no contest to felony cruelty to animals was sentenced Friday to a year in jail, with about 100 days credit for time already served.

Randal Hart was also sentenced to five years of probation, a mental health evaluation and treatment, 100 community service hours and $2,500 in fines.

Investigators said Hart stabbed his dog, Amber. After his arrest, he gave up ownership of the dog, and it was adopted by St. Johns County Deputy Dan Sorrells.

In April, Hart told the judge he suffers from schizophrenia and didn't understand what he was doing.

Sorrels was in court Friday but not Amber.
