Man in protective custody after 3-hour standoff

FORT WHITE, Fla. - A man threatening to harm himself Tuesday afternoon, creating a three-hour standoff with Columbia County deputies, was taken into protective custody.

Deputies were called to the man's home off Southwest Pathfinder Glen in Fort White just before 4 p.m.

They said that knowing that there were firearms in the home, the SWAT team and
Crisis Negotiation Unit responded to the scene. Out of an abundance of caution, negotiators talked
with the man for a few hours, trying to convince him to surrender to deputies peacefully.

Deputies said the man exited the home and deputies believed that he was going to leave in a vehicle. They said an electronic control device was deployed and the man was taken into protective custody without further incident.

The man was transported to a local crisis intervention facility for evaluation. He is not facing criminal charges at this time, deputies said.

Some residents in the area were evacuated or not permitted to return to their homes during the standoff. No injuries were reported.
