Man killed clearing street sweeper at Regency Square

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Police are calling Friday morning's death of a man using a street sweeper in the parking lot of Regency Square Mall a tragic accident.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office homicide detectives responding to the mall just after 8 a.m. found the man dead.

"It appears that the hopper that collects the debris possibly fell on the employee," JSO Lt. Mike Beckmann said.

A second work crew noticed the street sweeper was no longer behind him, went to investigate and found his coworker had been crushed.

The victim's name has not been released, but police say he was in his late 30s and had worked for six years for a company contracted by the mall to clean the grounds.
