Man seriously hurt in Rottweiler attack

PALATKA, Fla. - A 60-year-old Palatka man suffered severe injuries after being bitten by his Rottweiler Monday.

Putnam County deputies said a woman driving on East Towles Road saw Tommie Bennett slumped over on the side of the road trying to flag her down.

The woman stopped and called 911, then stayed with Bennett until rescuers arrived.

Bennett was taken to Putnam Community Medical Center, then flown to Shands Hospital in Gainesville with severe injuries to his head and scalp.

Deputies and Animal Control officers said they captured a large Rottweiler roaming loose in the area. Family members identified the dog as belonging to Bennett.

The dog was euthanized Tuesday morning, and tissue samples were sent to a lab for testing.
