JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 20-year-old man shot at by a police officer Tuesday during a foot chase was wanted in connection with a home invasion robbery in May, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Detectives got a tip that Deandre' Perkins was moving out of a home in Northwest Jacksonville, and they spotted him driving a car and followed him, Asst. Chief Chris Butler said at news conference Wednesday.

Another man and a 3-year-old child were also in the car.

Perkins told police he knew they were following him, but he didn't want to stop because he knew he was a wanted fugitive, so he led them on a pursuit, Butler said.

He eventually stopped the car and got out at West 18th and Grunthal streets and fled on foot, Butler said. Detectives chased him through the neighborhood.

Butler said that throughout the pursuit, Perkins kept grabbing at his waistband. He said Perkins climbed a fence and got on top of a detached garage. A detective ordered him to stop, and Perkins turned around holding his waistband, Butler said.

"The detective perceived this as a threat, and he fired his issued handgun, a Glock, at the suspect one time," Butler said.

Perkins was not hit, and he came down on the other side of the garage and was taken into custody.

The other man who was in the car, 22-year-old George Goodman III (pictured above), was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana.

The 3-year-old child was released to family members.
