Mom of girl killed in day care crash speaks

Driver who caused fatal day care crash in custody, FHP says

ORLANDO, Fla. – The mother of the 4-year-old girl who was killed after a car crashed into a Winter Park day care spoke out on Thursday one day after the deadly crash.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Lily Quintus was killed and 14 others were injured on Wednesday when the car crashed into the KinderCare Learning Center on Goldenrod Road.

Lily's mother, Nicole Quintus fought back tears, telling WKMG-TV that the family is overcome with grief.

"I have no idea how any of us are just going to wake up in the morning and go on with our lives," she said.

Quintus described her daughter as always having to get her way.

"She was very intense, she had to have her way no matter what. She wore the pants in this house, but she made people fall in love with her. Anyone that met her fell in love with her and that is what everyone is going to remember," she said.

Quintus said she had just picked up her 7-year-old from school when she received the call.

"It's not something you expect," Quintus said. "So you get a call from a teacher screaming that a car just ran through your daughter's school and you need to come there as soon as you can. It's not good."

Christina Carde's 5-year-old son Xavier was injured in the crash and knew Lily. Carde described the girl as energetic and always happy.

"She was a very sweet little girl she always came to say hi. She was always smiling," said Carde.

Carde's son escaped from the crash with only superficial injuries, but his mom worries what the tough conversation about what happened to Lily will do to him emotionally. She hasn't had that conversation yet.

"I'm telling him that most of his friends are OK, the good news that we are getting out of this, whatever friends have been released from the hospital," said Carde.

Troopers said Robert Corchado, 28, was driving a Dodge Durango that hit a Toyota Solara near the day care. The 61-year-old driver of the Solara lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the building, which was holding more than 50 children and staff members.

Troopers said Corchado fled the scene, and the FHP later issued an arrest warrant for him on charges of leaving the scene involving death and leaving the scene involving serious bodily injuries.

It's not clear if the driver of the Solara will face charges in the crash.

Corchado turned himself into the Orange County Jail at 4:12 p.m. Thursday.
