Officer hit by car while trying to take down suspect

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A narcotics detective was struck by a car while trying to take down a suspect Wednesday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Officer Kreshnik Isaraj's injuries appear to be non-life-threatening, Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt said.

Senterfitt said narcotics officers were doing an investigation and trying to take a suspect, 30-year-old Tyrone Booker, into custody at West Eighth and Laura streets in Springfield about 3 p.m.

Senterfitt said Isaraj was in the back seat of an unmarked cruiser. He said the suspect was in a convenience store parking lot and saw the officers, then ran. They said Booker had sold $20 of marijuana to undercover officers.

The cruiser stopped in the middle of the road, and Isaraj stepped out, right in front of a car heading east, and was hit.

Isaraj was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with multiple injuries.

The suspect was taken into custody by the other officers. There was no immediate word on whether the motorist whose car struck Isaraj would face charges.

"Officers are considered part of the JSO family," Senterfitt said. "It bothers everyone when an officer is seriously injured."

Isaraj's family has been notified.

Isaraj has been with JSO for five years.
