Jacksonville police said Jerry Campbell's girlfriend found him injured outside of a home on South Gulf Road just after 7 p.m.

The man had wounds on his face and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Police said he was unconscious.

According to a police report, Campbell's girlfriend didn't know if the injury was accidental or if he was a victim of battery.

Doctors at the hospital said Campbell had a broken nose and a possible head injury. They said his injuries were life-threatening.

Police said they had not found any witnesses, but were continuing to look for evidence and canvassing the neighborhood.

Police said no arrests have been made.

Neighbors who knew Campbell said he is a very nice guy and a disabled Navy veteran. They said he's lived at the home for at least 20 years.
