Police: Man shot at post office; woman crashes, arrested nearby

Pursuit, crash, arrest come after Westside killing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Police say a woman shot a man several times, killing him Sunday afternoon outside a post office on Blanding Boulevard, then speed away in a car.

Detectives say the man and woman were in an argument and it quickly escalated.

"A female pulled out a pistol and shot a male several times. She then got into her vehicle and fled," said Lt. Michael Eason, of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. "This was witnessed by a retired JSO sergeant who followed her in his vehicle, giving us updates on the location of the vehicle."

Homicide detectives say officers pursued the fleeing suspect until she caused a crash at the intersection of Timuquana Road and Seaboard Avenue -- about a mile from the shooting scene. She struck a car carrying a woman with children in her car -- before she was taken into custody.

Police say the woman in the second car received minor injuries.

Several people at nearby businesses witnessed the chase and crash.

"Next thing I know, I saw the police taking her out of the car and she's fighting them and next thing I know, they're putting her on the ground, and they're trying to cuff her," said Janey Denmark, who witnessed the crash. "The whole time, she's struggling and fighting with them."

"I'm just thinking of her driving. That could've been me with my kids," said Denmark.

Investigators closed off part of Timuquana Road and taped off the post office for several hours to try to piece together a motive.

"The female was upset. We don't know what precipitated it or any of that yet," said Eason. "Homicide detectives are still investigating it."

The names of those involved have not been released at this time.
