Search warrant details amount of steroids in ex-police chief's home

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – When investigators went through the home of former Atlantic Beach Police Chief Mike Classey, they had an idea they would find illegal steroids, according to the a search warrant obtained Thursday by News4Jax.

But it was something else they found that they were surprised by.

"I think we were all shocked at the amount when we went to the home," said Special Agent in Charge Dennis Bustle, of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Classey resigned last week and was arrested Tuesday on 18 counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of trafficking in codeine, tampering with evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the search warrant, investigators took the following from Classey's house:

  • A bottle of hydrocodone
  • A box containing steroids
  • 13 bottles and boxes of prescription medication believed to be steroids
  • Two prescription bottles containing unknown pills
  • One box containing numerous empty bottles of prescription drugs
  • A duffel bag containing 11 plastic bags containing steroids

Before the raid on he home, agents intercepted a shipment of drugs they said Classey ordered from India, including nearly 1,000 doses of Xanax.

Classey is no longer in jail after posting bond Tuesday.

The FDLE tested the pills found at his home and said some tested positive for Xanax, some for codeine. When FDLE and the state attorney announced Classey's arrest, they said they don't believe he was selling the drugs but was using them himself.

They also said he is charged with tampering with evidence because they believe he tried to destroy his home computer that he used to order the drugs online from overseas.
