Suspect in South Florida double homicide found dead in Lake City hotel room

Pedro Maldonado was wanted in the murder of Weston woman, son

LAKE CITY, Fla. - The suspected killer of a Weston woman and her teenage son was found dead early Wednesday morning in a Lake City hotel room of an apparent self-inflicted knife wound, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office began searching for 53-year-old Pedro Maldonado after they responded Tuesday to a call at a Weston townhome, where a woman and her teenage son were found dead.

Investigators had not released the victims' names or other details, but it has been confirmed that the two died as a result of a violent double homicide and named Maldonado a suspect.

Columbia County officials say they were asked by Broward County authorities to be on the lookout for Maldanado, who they believed was involved in another violent attack in Leon County earlier in the day and was still thought to be in north Florida.

Just before 11 p.m., Columbia County deputies spotted Maldanado's black Volvo at the Cabot Lodge on U.S. 90 just off Interstate 75.   After confirming with the hotel manager that Maldanado checked in Tuesday, part of the facility was evacuated and the SWAT and crisis negotiations teams were called.

After all attempts to make contact with the suspect were unsuccessful, SWAT tam members entered the room and found Maldanado dead of an apparent self-inflicted knife wound.

Columbia County officials they would continue working with Broward County and Leon County authorities to investigate the case.
