Teen accused of sexually assaulting student

D'Shawn Hosang, 16, denies having sex with girl

PALM COAST, Fla. - A 16-year-old Matanzas High School student is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in a stairwell during the school day on Monday.

Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies say D'Shawn Hosang and the victim were in separate classes and both requested a hall pass to go to the media center about 9:45 a.m.  Instead, investigators say the two met under a stairwell, where the victim says what started out as kissing ended in rape.

School Superintendent Janet Valentine said the victim reported the rape right after it happened.

Deputies say the two students were unaccounted for less than 10 minutes. The incident occurred while a school resource officer and about 600 students were in the school. The Sheriff's Office says a second deputy was walking the grounds at the time of the assault.

"That's really frightening that would happen at our school," said student Teresa Carr.

Detectives who interviewed Hosang (booking photo, right) say he denied having sex with the girl, but admitted to meeting her in the stairwell. Text messages between the teens shortly after the incident led detectives to file charges against Hosang.

He was arrested at 5 p.m., booked into the Flagler County Inmate Facility and then transferred to the Youth Services Division in Daytona Beach. Hosang was additionally charged with violation of probation stemming from a previous arrest for auto burglaries.

Flagler County's school superintendent says Matanzas High School recently installed surveillance cameras in the school.

"We have 50 cameras in the hallways of Matanzas High School, but we did not happen to have one in the stairwell where this occurred," Superintendent Janet Valentine said.

School officials said they're reviewing security procedures, placement of their cameras, and who more can be done to ensure students are accounted for at all times.

Students who know the Hosang told Channel 4 they never thought the teen would be capable of rape.

"He's a nice kid; he's never done anything wrong," said Summer Washko. "He's very quiet."
