JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Joint Base Lewis-McChord will hold a memorial service Wednesday for the friends and family of a Florida soldier who was killed in Afghanistan.

Pfc. Markie T. Sims, of Citra, Fla., died Dec. 29 of wounds from an improvised bomb.

The 20-year-old was a member of the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team that deployed in November.

Sims had attended North Marion High School and graduated from Marion Technical Institute in 2011. He told his family soon after that he was joining the military.

"I didn't want him to go because of the stuff that happens there," his mother, Wanda Thompson, told the Ocala-Star Banner. "That's my baby. He was a boy. I didn't want him to go."

A funeral for Simw was held Jan. 12 at the United Missionary Baptist Church in Reddick, Fla.
