JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Family, friends and admirers gave a final farewell for a former First Lady of Jacksonville on Wednesday.

They came from all over the city to pay their respects to Jean Godbold, the wife of former Mayor Jake Godbold.

The pastor of Wesley Fellowship on North Pearl Street said it was the biggest crowd his church has had in more than a decade.

Jean Godbold was eulogized as an unsung hero who helped make the nine years of her husband's administration so successful.

She was a woman who never had a critical word about anyone, completely unpretentious, full of love and friendship for all who knew her.

Following the funeral, she was laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetary, just a few blocks from Andrew Jackson High School, where she met her future husband when they were students.

The Godbolds were married for 57 years. Besides her husband, she is survived by their son, Ben, and two granddaughters, Morgan and Matilda.

Jean Godbold was 81.
