FRUIT COVE, Fla. - St. Johns County deputies are looking for three men who burst into an unlocked, gated home on Roscoe Boulevard just before midnight Thursday wearing ski masks and gloves.
Authorities said one man pulled a gun on the homeowner while another ordered her to open a safe.
After taking several items from the safe, the robbers tied up the homeowner and searched the home for other safes before leaving. Deputies said they got away with cash, collectables, jewelry and guns.
A K-9 team tracked the path of the robbers, finding items and other evidence associated with the robbery before losing the scent at the Christ Redeemer Church parking lot. Deputies believe the men may have had a vehicle waiting.
The robbers were described as large white men between 25 and 35 years old wearing dark clothing.
Deputies identified the victim as Lita Hart, wife of Brig Hart, a business owner once best known as a successful Amway distributor. Investigators said Lita Hart was able to dial 911 to get help while still tied up.
"The question then becomes, why that residence? Well, we know that the family that resides in this house is certainly not a family that is unknown not only in our area but across the United States," said Sgt. Chuck Mulligan. "Given the family's history that some of the items in the safe were of value and those items are now out on the streets somewhere with at least three suspects, we're going to look to recover that if we can. Certainly, we'll investigate to the point that we can determine who did this, and we want to get them behind bars. That's the end game."
Anyone with any information about the robbery is asked to call the Sheriff?s Office at 904-824-8304 or Crime Stoppers at 888-277 8477.
