Sailor found dead on aircraft carrier Enterprise

Headline Goes Here

It was a rare and nostalgic sight at Naval Station Mayport on Tuesday morning as an aircraft carrier went through the jetties and docked at the basin. About 5,000 sailors on the USS Enterprise got some shore leave before deployment.

NORFOLK, Va. - The Department of Defense says a sailor was found dead aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

Officials say 47-year-old Master Chief Petty Officer Richard J. Kessler Jr., of Gulfport, Fla., was found dead Friday in his berthing compartment. No other details on Kessler's death have been released.

Media outlets report that Kessler was assigned to the USS Enterprise as a logistics specialist.

The ship homeported at Naval Station Norfolk is currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Enterprise is currently on its 22nd and final deployment. It was commissioned in November 1961 and is scheduled to be deactivated this fall.
