More security spotted after man gunned down at Jacksonville Beach

Memorial in Glen McNeil Jr.'s honor continues to grow

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – Eleven days after a 23-year-old man was gunned down at Jacksonville Beach, more security can be spotted near the area of the shooting.

"They've stepped up and beefed up security," Zachary Schwartz said. "They're checking bags."

Glen McNeil Jr. was laid to rest Saturday morning at the Destination Church in Arlington.

Meanwhile, at the beach, a memorial in his honor continues to grow.

"They've got a lot of security on this and I know the director has really put a lot of thought into the entrances and gates," Schwartz said. "I think they're running a tight ship tonight."

More than a week after McNeil was shot to death at the Jacksonville Beach Pavilion, the city's eventful weekends continue.

Saturday night, the JAX Beach Freedom Festival was held, and at every corner, you could spot police.

"Jacksonville Beach, everybody is out here to have a good time, listen to live music, have a couple drinks," Schwartz said. "They've got security walking around and really keeping everyone in line. I haven't seen anyone in a negative mood today."

Right in the heart of Saturday's action is a growing memorial for McNeil. News4Jax saw members of his family at the memorial site still shaken by the tragedy.

"The memorial is a great tribute," said McNeil's cousin, Maurice Chaplin. "It's one of those things that allows his life to continue to live on. Hopefully we can get this memorial as a permanent spot."

As Jax Beach continues to remain a popular social spot, some say their willingness to hang out is changing.

"What happened on Fourth of July makes you not even want to come to this event," Megan Moore said. "There definitely needs to be more security. Maybe those high watchers or something, but the nightlife is dangerous here at the beach."

There are still no arrests in the case. Anyone who may know what happened is asked to call Jacksonville Beach police.
