Ms. Senior Jacksonville 2014 is crowned

Winner Deborah Thompson plans to focus on health and wellness

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - It's a pageant designed to showcase the beauty, talent and intellegence of women in Jacksonville, 60 years of age and up. It's the Ms. Senior Jacksonville pageant, but don't let the name fool you.

These ladies were doing the cupid shuffle, fitness routines and everything in between, all with class, elegance and grace.

This years queen is Deborah Thompson, a business owner and consultant who is 67 years young.  She said she was prompted to enter the pageant by a friend and was surprised when her name was called.

Thompson decided to do a fitness routine as her talent, a reflection of the role fitness plays in her life. She works out five times a week.

"I think health is our wealth," Thompson says. "And as we grow older, I watched my mother and I have two sisters who are diabetic and stroke my sister has lost both her legs. And I'm the oldest and they're the ones that are sick."

Thompson says she wanted to defy those circumstances by trying to do something different.

"I would like to spread the word that seniors can look just like anyone else they can be happy, and as I learned from the pageant we  can have fun and I think life is fun."
