Veterans Farm Rehab

Soldiers Use Plants to Put Down Roots on a New Life

Red, White, and Blueberries. It sounds like a 4th of July tradition, but at local farm, its rehab. Soldiers are using plants to put down roots on a new life.

It's called horticulture therapy. It's helping veterans by teaching them to grow organic fruits and vegetables. After completion of the 14 week fellowship program vets have the knowledge and experience to go out and start their own farm, or to work for larger farming organizations.

As a way to raise funds and awareness for the veterans farm, these guys will have a red white and blueberry fundraiser. Twenty dollars to buy a bush, then you can put a dog tag on the plant in honor of a fallen hero or a loved one and let the guys who work out here know they are appreciated.

According to military reports, 30 per cent of returning soldiers either have a traumatic brain injury or post traumatic stress disorder that can make returning into civilian society tough. So, believe it or not, blueberries have given him new purpose and an outlet you can't find at any VA hospital.
