NAS Jax-Based Helo Crashes In Nevada, Killing 5

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Navy helicopter based at NAS Jacksonville crashed in Nevada early Tuesday morning, killing all 5 crew members on board.

The helicopter, assigned to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Seven (HS-7) crashed approximately 10 miles west of Austin, Nevada. The squadron, known as the Dusty Dogs, was conducting a routine training mission from NAS Fallon.

The squadron is part of Carrier Air Wing Three, which deploys on the USS Harry S. Truman. The squadron is on a month-long training detachment at NAS Fallon that began on April 30.

The crash site was initially located by military aircraft at about 12:30 a.m EDT. A Navy UH-1N search and rescue helicopter, dispatched from NAS Fallon, arrived at the scene at approximately 1:15 a.m. EDT.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The names of the aircrew are being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.
