Club owner killed trying to 'keep the peace'

4 people shot early Sunday outside Northwest Jacksonville nightclub

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – People who live around a nightclub in Grand Park were not shocked to hear there was a quadruple shooting there New Years morning, but they were stunned to learn the part owner of the business was killed in the gunfire.

James Darren Graham, 45, died at the hospital after the shooting outside the Chicago Club, a business he co-owned.

Friends, who knew Graham by the nickname "Chuck," are devastated.

"You know, he tried to keep the guns and all that out the club," said neighbor Brett Brown. "It's a tragedy.... He's a good friend."

"It's so rowdy over here," neighbor Winfred Noisette said. "I knew something was going to happen, sooner or later somebody was going to get really hurt."

Neighbors are hopeful the shooting is a wake-up call to the community, arguing the business should be turned into something safer.

Living just a few houses down from the club, Noisette says her car was shot up in a different gunfight weeks earlier. She's working to get the Chicago Club shut down.

"It's not going to get better as long as it stays open a club, and I don't want to see nobody else get hurt," Noisette said.

Channel 4's crime analyst Ken Jefferson says closing the club would be a good idea.

"You can't not do anything, or not say anything and say it doesn't affect you, because it does," said Jefferson. "This murder affects everyone in that area."

No one from the business was available for comment on Monday.

Police have released few details about what led to the altercation and no arrests have been made. The names of the other shooting victims were not released.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call the police at 904-630-0500. To remain anonymous and perhaps earn a cash reward, call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
