Man injured when shots fired into Springfield barber shop

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police are investigating after a stylist was injured when shots were fired Monday afternoon into a barber shop in Jacksonville's Springfield neighborhood.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said police are looking for whoever fired the shots into Mastermind Kuts and Designs on North Main Street at 15th Street about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

It happened just across the street from Andrew Robinson Elementary School and a few blocks from Kirby-Smith Middle School.

According to the Sheriff's Office incident report, a couple of shots went through the front window of Mastermind Kuts & Designs and a 53-year-old employee suffered cuts to the back of his head and neck. It's unclear if he was grazed or struck by glass.

The employee told police he heard the shots and looked up to see someone pointing a handgun out of a black pickup truck that was driving by. He ran out the back door, bleeding. He was taken to UF Health Jacksonville for treatment of a minor injury and was later released.

Other witnesses told police they saw a black Dodge Ram pickup truck with camouflage on the lower half traveling on West 15th Street toward Main Street. One witness outside the barber shop told police the truck had circled the block several times before the shots were fired.

Another witness said the truck turned onto 16th Street and then sped away north onto Hubbard Street after the shots were fired, according to the JSO report.

"All we heard was gunshots and the girl told me it was firecrackers. But in this neighborhood, I know gunfire from firecrackers," said a man who was inside the business next door at the time.

The man said he's fed up with the senseless violence.

"It's time for the black man to stand up, stop killing one another," he said. "Stop player hating."

Detectives found numerous shell casings in front of the business. On Tuesday, News4Jax observed at least 10 bullet holes in the building.

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
