Roaches, rodent droppings temporarily close 4 restaurants

Restaurant Report

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – Four local restaurants were temporarily closed because of roaches and rodent droppings. Several were repeat offenders and one was still closed seven inspections later.

Abuelita's Cuisine is a mobile food truck that runs in Lake City. Inspectors found roaches and rodent droppings. Two bugs were on the wall and inside a cabinet and they also found eight dull crumbly rodent droppings in a cabinet with soda cans. There was also rodent nesting material found. The inspector cleaned up foam pellets that were gathered under that same counter. The inspector came back the same day and there were no traces of any pests.

Abuelita's Cuisine was cleared with zero violations.

Village Bread Café in the Jacksonville Landing had its second closure because of roaches this year.  A half dozen live roaches where found in the kitchen. The bugs were in cabinets in the dining room and two were by a can opener on the food preparation table, according to the report. There were also dead roaches in the restaurant as well.

The next day, the inspector came back and the bugs were gone and the restaurant was able to reopen.

News4Jax has asked about the roaches and pest control at Village Bread Café at the Landing before.  A manager said that because of the restaurant's open layout, they can't fog and it makes it difficult to do effective pest control.

An inspector found a dozen live roaches at Tacos Meche at the Beach Boulevard Flea Market. A couple of hours later the restaurant was cleared with no bugs or serious violations.

As of Thursday, Jaxon Social in Jacksonville Beach was still closed after a state inspector found roaches during multiple inspections.

The restaurant's first inspection this year was on July 18. The other inspections were on July 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25 and 26. Each time, the inspector said, roaches were found.

The first inspection was prompted by a complaint. The inspector wrote that he found roaches on two kitchen shelves and more inside a reach-in the cooler. There was one on a shelf and the others were in the cooler gasket on the cookline. Fifteen dead roaches were also found inside a trap device under the fryer.

During the next seven inspections, there were roaches spotted in the same places. As of Wednesday, the inspector still saw roaches, which was the only violation that the report noted.

When News4Jax went to the restaurant, the lights were out and the owner said it wasn't' a good time to talk.
