JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - An Orange Park woman was hit by a car and killed while chasing her dog on Interstate 295 Tuesday evening.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 56-year-old Sylvia Taylor was a passenger in a car southbound south on I-295 near Pritchard Road about 8:15 p.m. Witnesses said her dog jumped or fell out of the vehicle.

Troopers said the driver stopped the car on the shoulder and Taylor got out to try and get the dog back. That's when she was hit by an oncoming Toyota Camry. She died at the scene.

The driver and two young children in the car with Taylor were not hurt.

The driver of the Camry stopped and cooperated with the FHP in the investigation.
