The Sheriff's Office said the woman's 4-year-old son, who was sitting in the seat directly behind the driver, accidentally shot through the driver's seat and struck the mother in the torso.

Deputies said it was a handgun, but they didn't immediately know the make or model.

The child was with the grandmother while deputies tried to reach the father, who was at work. The Sheriff's Office has notified the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
