$55K Walmart grant helps children through Blessings in a Backpack
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Dozens of food-insecure children will receive backpacks filled with much-needed food this weekend thanks to the helping hands of a few Walmart associates and school officials on Thursday.
It's all part of the Jacksonville Blessings in a Backpack program to ensure elementary schoolchildren receive nutritional meals every weekend during the school year. Now, thanks to a $55,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation's State Giving Program, the nonprofit organization can feed an additional 600 children who need it most.
"We are so thankful for the donation that the Walmart Foundation is making to the Jacksonville Blessings in a Backpack program. It is because of partners like Walmart that we are able to continue with our mission to end childhood hunger," said Nikki Grizzle, director of marketing and public relations for Blessings in a Backpack.
The grant, which supports the organization's work this year as well as work from last year, will be presented to Blessings in a Backpack during a check presentation ceremony held Thursday at Hyde Grove Elementary.
Prior to the ceremony, Walmart volunteers will help fill backpacks with food for this weekend's distribution.
