JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Starting in January 2016, Friends of Hemming Park will introduce four, large blue recycling cans to the city’s oldest public park in the center of Downtown Jacksonville.

The cans are designed to collect plastic bottles and aluminum cans sold during lunch hours and special events in the park.

This first-ever public recycling program for Downtown Jacksonville is sponsored by local law firm Johnson & Lufrano, P.A.

“I saw a lot of cans being thrown away during a Hemming Park Beer Garden event and asked if there was an option for recycling mine,” said Diana Johnson, partner at Johnson & Lufrano. “After I learned there wasn’t an option for recycling downtown, we met with Friends of Hemming Park to discuss how we could change that.”

Currently there are no consolidated recycling services for Downtown Jacksonville. Through its partnership with Johnson & Lufrano, Hemming Park will receive weekly recycling pickups through Republic Services.

“We feel strongly about environmental responsibility and keeping our city clean,” said Matt Lufrano, downtown resident and partner at Johnson & Lufrano. “Offering public recycling services in Downtown Jacksonville is the right thing to do, so we’re doing it.”

“We are excited to partner with Johnson & Lufrano to become pioneers in offering recycling options Downtown and we hope other companies will follow suit,” said Vince Cavin, CEO of Friends of Hemming Park.
