Deputy assists veteran who ran out of gas

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – An Alachua County Sheriff’s Office patrol officer is being praised for helping a veteran whose vehicle ran out of gas Tuesday night.

The veteran was en route to the VA hospital when he ran out of gas. The veteran had no means to get gas and no family in town.

Deputy J. Stephenson took matters into his own hands, and made him feel like a part of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office family.

Stephenson took the stranded veteran to the gas station, used his personal funds to purchase gas to make sure the veteran got out of the cold weather and to the hospital for treatment.
