Church hosts Youth Explosion back-to-school celebration

Church of Oakland gives away backpacks, school supplies

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Church of Oakland kicked off their 2016 Youth Explosion celebration Tuesday with planned activities that will go until Aug. 14.

This year's celebration will support students and families to be ready for the upcoming school year with the help of multiple sponsors and partners.

“Our partners have been and continue to be very supportive of our efforts and without them we could not take on such a ministry of this magnitude” said Rev. Tavares Parker.

The Youth Explosion Kick-Off started with a student presentation and a backpack giveaway.

Special guests included YMCA summer camp participants and residents from Oakland Terrance and Renaissance Apartments.

On Aug. 6, Youth Explosion will be at Metro Park from 9 a.m. to noon giving away backpacks and school applies along with a parent information information exchange.

The Church of Oakland's planned activities for the Youth Explosion event include:

  • Aug. 12 - Youth rally at the Church of Oakland from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. with special guest Rev. Terry Hill.
  • Aug. 13 - Youth Explosion neighborhood event from 9 a.m. to noon  with backpack and school supply giveaways along with student physicals, haircuts and parent empowerment sessions.
  • Aug. 14 - Church service with students as special guests from 10 a.m. to noon.
