Golfers overwhelmed by community support

Ponte Vedra, FLA – What started as a notion to do some volunteering has turned into a big fundraiser for a local children's charity.

"This all got started as the result of a bunch of retired guys in our golf group thinking we should convert some of our free energy and love of the game into volunteering to help this wonderful community," Jim Britts told News4Jax.

Britts is involved with the Riverwood Men's Club in the Del Webb community of Nocatee.

The group chose Dreams Come True of Jacksonville as their charity, a group well-known for creating lasting happy memories for children who face life-threatening illness.

The men's group had no idea how quickly their idea would take off.

The November 7th golf tournament at Palencia Golf Club is already full, but the club is hoping for some more hole sponsorships and donations for their auction.

"What's amazing is the number of sponsors who have personal experience or know of someone who has directly benefited from the charity," Britts said.

Tykeria Williams' mother will gladly share with anyone what Dreams Come True has meant to her family.

Eleven years ago Natasha Williams adopted an infant name Tykeria. Williams had been helping to take care of the healthy little girl when she learned the child had suffered abuse at the hands of another caretaker.

Tykeria became a quadriplegic and started having seizures because of a brain injury.

Williams couldn't turn her back on Tykeria, so she adopted her.

"I loved her when she was healthy, and I loved her just as much after she was abused," Wiliams told News4Jax. "I couldn't turn my back on her."

Williams and her whole family just recently returned from a week-long "Disney Dream" adventure in Orlando, made possible by Dreams Come True.

"Tykeria was smiling the whole time," Williams said. "Dreams Come True has changed our lives."
