Deputy saves toddler after near drowning in pool
COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Columbia County deputy saved a toddler on Thursday after the child fell into a pool and wasn't breathing.
Sgt. Howard Bulthuis to Southwest Troy Street in unincorporated Columbia County, after a call came in that a baby had fallen into a pool at the home and was unresponsive.
Bulthuis found the 22-month-old girl on the floor, not breathing, and he began CPR.
The toddler soon started breathing and spitting up water.
When EMS personnel arrived they continued treatment and prepared the girl for transport.
The toddler was flown to a hospital in Gainesville, where she is in stable condition.
The incident is under investigation by detectives and the Department of Children and Families.
“I’m extremely proud of Sgt. Bulthuis. His quick actions prevented a tragic outcome for this family and our community as a whole,” Sheriff Mark Hunter said. “The lifesaving training the personnel at the Sheriff’s Office undergo routinely paid off immensely.”
