Annual Shop with a Cop event spreads Christmas cheer to kids less fortunate

63 children given $150 to shop at Walmart

BAKER COUNTY, Fla. – With Christmas less than two weeks away, the Baker County Sheriff's Office hosted its annual Shop with a Cop event on Monday.

There were no rules! And the 63 children who were given $150 to shop at Walmart could buy whatever they wanted.

The event is the work of two sergeants with the Sheriff's Office.

Years ago only about 12 or 15 kids would show up, but every year the number grows.

Baker County Sheriff Joey Dobson said for most of the kids the event is the most special occasion of the Christmas season.

"To be quite frank with you, this is sad, but this is all that a lot of these kids will get,” Dobson said. “We are so proud and thankful that all of this goes together and we are able to put this on for these kids."

Dobson said although he is retiring soon, he hopes that the event will continue for many more years.
