Eye doctor gives gift of sight

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A local eye doctor gave the gift of sight Wednesday morning to nine lucky people.

Dr. Jeffrey Levenson performed free cataract surgery for the uninsured patients through his annual program Gift of Sight.

The program was established over 25 years ago by Levenson. It has helped restore vision for more than 350 patients who have no access to insurance and are legally blind due to cataracts. Each procedure takes about 15 minutes and is performed under topical anesthesia.

For Hilliard resident Raymond Stokes, the surgery couldn't come at a better time. He was refereed to Levenson by his optometrist in Callahan and was thrilled when he found out he would be one of Levenson's Gift of Sight patients this year.

"It's been a rough journey for me. In the last couple of years, my eyesight got real bad. I couldn't see to go to work in the morning," Stokes said. " This will be the best Christmas gift I could get."
