13-year-old honored as GoFundMe Hero

Taylor Richardson raises money to send kids to Hidden Figures

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 13-year-old Jacksonville girl has been recognized as the GoFundMe Hero of the Month in February.

After attending a screening of the movie "Hidden Figures" at the White House, Taylor Richardson, a student at the Bolles School, started one of the first GoFundMe campaigns in the country with the goal to take girls in her community to see the movie.

Richardson's campaign raised over $17,000, far more than her goal of $2,600, and she also helped start a trend of over 70 similar campaigns in other communities across the country. To date, more than $120,000 has been raised to take young people to see the film about brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind the launch of John Glenn into orbit.

Richardson has an affinity for science, technology, engineering and mathematics or STEM, and aspires to be an astronaut. Richardson said math and science are important and that girls should know about STEM.

Richardson hopes that after seeing the movie, young girls will be inspired to consider STEM career paths.
